Russian Forces Intensify Assaults on Ukraine’s Zaporizhia Region

On February 27, Russian forces launched a significant offensive in Ukraine’s Zaporizhia region, executing 720 attacks across 31 settlements. The assault, which involved drone strikes, artillery shelling, and missile launches, resulted in the death of one person and injuries to eight others.

In Zaporizhzhia city, an overnight attack injured ten individuals, including an eight-year-old child. The strikes caused extensive damage to infrastructure, with approximately 80 high-rise buildings and private houses affected, as well as two shopping centers.

Simultaneously, Russian forces targeted Kharkiv, injuring 16 people, including two children. Notably, a Russian first-person-view drone reached the Kharkiv region for the first time, though it caused no injuries after colliding with a tree.

In response, Ukrainian forces launched a counteroffensive on the Russian border town of Belgorod. Ukrainian missiles inflicted severe damage on energy installations, temporarily leaving nearly 10,000 residents without power. Over a 24-hour period, at least 115 Ukrainian drones were deployed towards Belgorod.

The conflict’s human toll remains stark, with more than 90,000 Ukrainians missing under special circumstances. In a recent exchange, Russia handed over the remains of 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers to Kyiv, while receiving 35 bodies of Russian soldiers.

Amidst the ongoing hostilities, diplomatic efforts continue. Trilateral talks involving Russia, the US, and Ukraine took place in Geneva, focusing on post-war reconstruction. Concurrently, Russia announced plans to retaliate against the European Union’s decision to limit Moscow’s diplomatic presence in Brussels to 40 personnel.

In related developments, tensions have spilled over into other regions. A suspected Russian drone approached the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle in Sweden, and Romania scrambled fighter jets when a drone breached its airspace during a Russian attack near the border.

As the conflict persists, the geopolitical landscape remains fraught with complexity. The US has extended the deadline for negotiations with Russian oil company Lukoil until April 1, reflecting the broader economic ramifications of the war.
