Russia Intensifies Strikes on Ukraine as Geneva Talks Loom

Russia launched a series of missile and drone attacks across Ukraine overnight, injuring at least 25 people and causing significant damage to residential areas. The strikes, which targeted multiple regions, come at a critical juncture as diplomatic efforts continue to address the ongoing conflict.

In Kharkiv and its surrounding areas, at least 16 individuals were wounded. The city of Zaporizhia also suffered, with seven people injured and damage reported to 19 apartment buildings and four homes. In Kryvyi Rih, two people sustained injuries due to the attacks.

Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, experienced damage to a nine-storey residential building in the Darnytskyi district. Fires broke out in a home and several garages, though no casualties were reported. The city’s air defense systems were activated in response to the missile strikes, highlighting the ongoing threat to civilian areas.

Amidst the escalating violence, diplomatic efforts are set to continue in Geneva. Ukraine’s lead negotiator, Rustem Umerov, is scheduled to meet with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. This meeting aims to lay the groundwork for a full session of talks involving Moscow, Kyiv, and Washington, anticipated in early March.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently held discussions with US President Donald Trump, underscoring the importance of international support in the negotiations. However, the talks face significant challenges, particularly concerning territorial disputes in the eastern Donbas region.

Russia is seeking full control over Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, a demand that Ukraine has firmly rejected without security guarantees. The Ukrainian constitution prohibits the ceding of territory, complicating the potential for a diplomatic resolution.

In a recent exchange, Russia transferred the bodies of 1,000 deceased Ukrainian soldiers in return for 35 Russian soldiers’ bodies, highlighting the human cost of the conflict. Hundreds of thousands are believed to have died since the hostilities began, underscoring the urgent need for a peaceful resolution.

As the situation unfolds, the international community watches closely, hoping that the upcoming talks in Geneva will pave the way for a de-escalation of hostilities and a path towards peace.
