U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the deployment of two nuclear submarines to strategic areas following what he deemed “highly provocative” remarks from Dmitry Medvedev, the former Russian President. Trump stated that the decision was made as a precautionary measure against the potential for these statements to escalate tensions. Emphasizing the power of words, he expressed hope that this situation would not result in unintended consequences.
The specific locations of the submarines remain undisclosed due to standard U.S. military practices. Medvedev had recently issued threats to the U.S. in reaction to Trump’s demands for Moscow to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine or face severe sanctions. Both nations hold the largest arsenals of nuclear weapons globally. In a post on Truth Social, Trump did not clarify whether the submarines are nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed but mentioned their planned repositioning in response to Medvedev’s statements.
Trump and Medvedev have been locked in a public dispute on social media, coinciding with Trump’s newly set deadline for ending the conflict by August 8, which Russian President Vladimir Putin has shown no signs of meeting. Earlier, Trump had given a “10 or 12” day timeline and threatened heavy tariffs on Russian oil and exports if the war did not cease within 50 days. Medvedev criticized Trump for issuing ultimatums, calling them a step towards conflict, and described the latest deadlines as theatrical. On Thursday, Medvedev addressed the situation on Telegram, making reference to a “dead hand” threat, interpreted by some experts as alluding to Russia’s retaliatory nuclear command system.
Trump has previously characterized Medvedev as a failed leader, urging him to be cautious with his rhetoric. Medvedev, now deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council and a staunch supporter of Russia’s actions in Ukraine, continues to voice his opposition to Western policies. Despite economic pressures on both sides for relief, the diplomatic tone remains tense. The events follow significant developments domestically, including the Justice Department’s engagement with Ghislaine Maxwell concerning the Epstein case, and escalating security incidents around site locations.
Meanwhile, the latest SpaceX mission has commenced after weather delays, preparing for a crew exchange at the space station. On other fronts, Trump has targeted China over its handling of the opioid crisis, implementing broad tariffs in response.
