President Donald Trump emphasized the importance of being fully equipped for any nuclear conflict, responding to comments from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. At a White House press briefing, Trump highlighted his decision to move two nuclear submarines nearer to Russian territory, citing the necessity for national safety. “We had no choice,” Trump stated. “A threat was issued, and we needed to act accordingly to safeguard our nation. Medvedev’s words involved nuclear discourse, and we must be ready for such situations,” he said. Earlier, Trump had communicated via Truth Social his instruction to position two US nuclear submarines in strategic zones because of Medvedev’s social media comments.
Trump criticized Medvedev’s language as reckless and warned of the dangers of careless speech. The tension grew as Trump labeled Medvedev a “failed” leader and advised caution in his communications. In response, Medvedev, now deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, retorted with a stern warning and reference to the ‘Perimetr’ system, an automatic nuclear retaliation mechanism from the Soviet era reportedly still active in Russia. “Regarding economic sanctions and hazardous moves, he should remember how perilous the ‘Dead Hand’ can be,” Medvedev replied. Though not officially acknowledged by Russia, this system is believed by Western experts to be a critical deterrent for any incapacitating strikes against Russian command.
The White House and the Pentagon have abstained from further commentary, and verification of the submarines’ new deployments is not possible, as these details remain among the military’s top confidentiality concerns.
