President Donald Trump of the United States is reportedly losing patience with Russia over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, as mentioned by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. While Russia claims to be open to diplomatic resolutions, it insists that any agreement must address its own security issues. In a statement given to Fox News on Saturday, Rubio noted that although Trump has been committed to fostering peace and attempting to end hostilities, these efforts have not produced significant results. Rubio commented, “He’s gone above and beyond to resolve the situation.
It seems like he is becoming increasingly frustrated.” Rubio further noted that despite positive exchanges with Vladimir Putin and multiple phone discussions, no substantial progress has been achieved. “The president is growing impatient, losing his readiness to wait for Russia to take meaningful steps to conclude this conflict, which wasn’t initiated by him, yet he desires an end,” Rubio added, criticizing Moscow’s “delaying tactics.”
These remarks follow Trump’s imposition of a 50-day deadline for a ceasefire on Moscow, along with a warning of imposing severe sanctions, including fully prohibitive tariffs on countries purchasing Russian oil. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov indicated that the threat of sanctions might encourage Kiev to persist in warfare instead of seeking peace. Peskov also mentioned Trump’s approach as “rather harsh” but confirmed Moscow’s intention to maintain dialogue with Washington and work on mending the highly strained bilateral relations. Earlier this week, representatives from Russia and Ukraine conducted a third round of direct negotiations in Istanbul.
During the talks, Russia proposed temporary ceasefires to retrieve wounded and fallen soldiers and suggested the continuation of prisoner swaps and the return of soldiers’ remains. Nonetheless, considerable differences persist, with Russia demanding Ukraine acknowledge the loss of five regions that voted to join Russia, withdraw Ukrainian forces, maintain neutrality, and restrict its military strength. Ukraine has rejected these demands, calling them an “ultimatum.”
