UK Restores Diplomatic Relations with Syria as Lammy Visits Damascus

The United Kingdom has officially resumed diplomatic relations with Syria, as British Foreign Secretary David Lammy visited Damascus to engage in discussions with Syria’s interim leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa. During the visit, Lammy also met with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani. “After more than ten years of turmoil, there is newfound optimism for the Syrian people,” Lammy stated, marking this as the first visit by a UK minister to Syria in 14 years. He emphasized the UK’s commitment to supporting Syria’s new government in its efforts to create a stable and prosperous environment for its citizens. Syria has been rebuilding its ties with Western nations following the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, led by al-Sharaa’s Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group.

In a move to assist Syria in its recovery efforts, the British government recently removed sanctions on several Syrian entities and businesses, including departments and media outlets. Additionally, a number of sanctions on banks and oil companies were lifted. In the United States, President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order to remove a range of sanctions that had severely impacted Syria’s economy during Assad’s tenure. Syrian Foreign Minister al-Shaibani expressed his approval of Trump’s decision, stating it would pave the way for economic revitalization and international engagement.

The new leadership in Syria continues to face challenges in rebuilding the nation’s economy and infrastructure after a devastating civil war that lasted nearly 14 years and resulted in the loss of approximately 500,000 lives.
