Ukrainian Drone Allegedly Triggers Oil Depot Fire in Sochi, Say Russian Officials

A large fire at an oil facility near Sochi, Russia, is being attributed to a drone strike by Ukrainian forces, according to Russian officials. Due to the incident, the nearby Sochi airport has halted flights. Veniamin Kondratyev, the governor of the Krasnodar Region, shared on social media that remnants of a drone struck a fuel container, leading to 127 firefighters actively fighting the flames. Concurrently, a Russian missile reportedly struck residential areas and civilian infrastructure in the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv, as stated by local authorities.

Seven civilians were reportedly injured, and Ukraine’s State Emergency Service confirmed that three of these individuals were hospitalized. Russian sources reported several drone attacks from Ukraine over the weekend, focusing on southern cities in Russia such as Ryazan, Penza, and Voronezh. In one event in Voronezh, four individuals sustained injuries from a drone impact, the local governor reported. Russia’s defense ministry claimed its air forces intercepted 93 Ukrainian drones overnight, with 60 specifically over the Black Sea area.

Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched 83 drones along with 76 drones and seven missiles, intercepting 61 of these. They further noted 16 drones and six missiles making contact with targets across eight sites. These events follow a particularly deadly period for Ukrainian civilians, highlighted by an attack in Kyiv that resulted in at least 31 deaths. Over 300 drones and eight cruise missiles were reportedly used in this offensive, considered one of the most lethal on the city since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

Following these attacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the international community for harsher sanctions against Russia, while former U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Russia’s activities in Ukraine and signaled potential incoming sanctions against Moscow. Trump previously set a 50-day ultimatum in July for Russia to cease the conflict or face significant tariffs on its oil and exports, later adjusting this to a new deadline, which he extended to 8 August.
