In response to what US President Donald Trump described as “highly provocative” statements from Dmitry Medvedev, the former President of Russia, Trump announced the redeployment of two nuclear submarines to strategic locations. The decision was made to prepare for any potential consequences that could arise from Medvedev’s remarks. Trump emphasized the significance of words, expressing hope that this situation would not lead to serious outcomes. Details on the submarines’ destinations remain undisclosed due to standard military practice.
Medvedev recently issued warnings to the US following Trump’s demands for a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine, coupled with threats of strict sanctions. The United States and Russia, both holding the largest quantities of nuclear weapons globally, each have nuclear submarine fleets. Posting on Truth Social, Trump stated, “Due to the highly provocative statements by Dmitry Medvedev, now Deputy Chairman of the Russian Federation’s Security Council, I have ordered the redeployment of two nuclear submarines.” It was unclear if Trump referred to submarines that were nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed. In a later interaction with the media, Trump emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety for the American people in light of the perceived threat from the former Russian president.
The Kremlin has yet to officially react, but Trump’s comments have already impacted Moscow’s stock market, which saw a significant decline. The situation unfolds against a backdrop of a social media exchange filled with personal barbs between Trump and Medvedev. Amid this tense environment, President Trump has established a new ultimatum for President Putin to conclude the conflict by August 8, a deadline which the Russian leader has apparently ignored. Earlier, Trump set a 10-to-12-day timeline for resolution.
Trump has previously threatened Russia with severe trade tariffs on its oil and other exports if the conflict persists beyond 50 days. Medvedev, who led Russia from 2008 to 2012, accused Trump of playing high-stakes diplomatic games, acknowledging on a social media platform that each ultimatum constitutes a progression towards potential war. He criticized Trump’s demands as mere theatrics, claiming they held little sway over Russia. On Thursday, Medvedev referenced the concept of a “dead hand” as a thinly veiled reference to Russia’s counter-strike nuclear system, in a message disseminated via Telegram.
Thursday’s tit-for-tat escalated with Trump dismissing Medvedev as “the failed former president of Russia,” cautioning him about the dangers of his rhetoric. Medvedev remains a vocal supporter of Russia’s aggressive actions in Ukraine, initiated in 2022, and frequently denounces Western policies. This development occurs alongside various unrelated international and domestic events, including trade tensions and economic concerns.
