Israel Shooting Attack — A shooting attack in central Israel killed at least one person and wounded five others on Sunday, triggering a sweeping security operation that included raids on Arab communities and a high-level assessment by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office.
The violence erupted at a gas station at the entrance to the Kochav Yair area, a residential community situated close to the occupied West Bank city of Qalqilya. The attacker then continued firing at the entrances to the nearby towns of Tzur Yitzhak and Tzur Natan, extending the zone of danger across multiple communities before Israeli security forces intervened.
A 35-year-old man died of his gunshot wounds, becoming the sole fatality of the assault. Two of the five wounded are in serious condition, and all casualties were transported to two hospitals for treatment. Emergency responders from Magen David Adom, Israel’s national rescue service, were already conducting a large training exercise in a nearby community when the shooting was reported — a coincidence that allowed for a rapid medical response. Paramedics discovered one unconscious casualty inside a vehicle near the gas station, pulseless and not breathing, with visible gunshot wounds. A second injured person was found conscious beside the vehicle, suffering gunshot wounds to the upper body.

Israeli police identified the suspected gunman as a Palestinian holding Israeli citizenship from the town of Tayibe, located in the so-called Triangle region of central Israel. Officers recovered the weapon used in the attack. Police subsequently killed two suspects they described as allegedly involved in the shooting, though the precise circumstances of those deaths were not immediately detailed.
The security response was extensive. Israeli police, border guard soldiers, and special units fanned out across the area to search for any additional suspects. A security cordon was imposed on several neighbouring Arab villages, restricting movement while the operation was underway. The Israeli internal security agency, the Shin Bet, joined police in launching a raid campaign in Tayibe itself, the attacker’s hometown.
Netanyahu’s office convened a situational assessment in the immediate aftermath of the attack, signalling the gravity with which the government viewed the incident. The assault comes amid sustained tensions between Israelis and Palestinians, with violence in and around the West Bank remaining a persistent flashpoint.
Hamas issued a statement commending the attack, describing it as a ‘heroic’ operation. The Gaza-based militant group stopped short of claiming direct responsibility, a distinction that leaves open questions about whether the attacker acted independently or with any form of organisational support. Israeli authorities have not publicly confirmed any affiliation at this stage.
Israel Shooting Attack: Regional Implications
The Kochav Yair area, where the attack began, lies within the densely populated central corridor of Israel, in close geographic proximity to the West Bank. The proximity of Israeli towns to Palestinian population centres in this region has historically made it a sensitive zone for security incidents. Attacks originating from or involving residents of the Triangle — a cluster of Arab-majority towns inside Israel’s pre-1967 borders — have periodically strained communal relations within the country.
Investigations into the full circumstances of the attack, including the attacker’s motivations and any possible connections to broader networks, remained active as of Sunday evening.
